RAW
Every photo on this app is taken right now, with both cameras, no filters allowed. You cannot fake it. That is the entire point.

what RAW does#
RAW is a dating app built around one question: what if you could not lie? Every profile photo is taken live using both the front and back cameras at the same time. No uploading old photos. No filters. No pre-recorded content. The front camera captures your face; the back camera captures where you actually are.
The app also sends daily posting prompts at randomized times, so users share snapshots of their real lives rather than curated highlight reels. Matching is based on these unfiltered moments. "Swipe on truth, match on reality."
the authenticity problem#
Online dating has a credibility problem. A 2023 Pew Research Center study found that 53% of dating app users reported encountering fake or misleading profiles. Catfishing and heavily filtered photos are so common they have become expected. Trust is low, first dates are frequently disappointing, and a lot of people quietly give up on the whole thing.
Most dating apps address this with verification badges or reporting tools. Those react to dishonesty after it already happened. RAW's approach is different: make dishonesty architecturally impossible. If the only photos allowed are taken right now, through both cameras, with no editing, then the profile is the person. You cannot game a constraint you cannot bypass.
what we built#
The hardest part was making dual-camera capture feel instant. Triggering both the front and back cameras at the exact same moment, compositing the outputs into one image, across hundreds of Android and iOS device models with different hardware configurations, is not something the mobile OS makes easy. Camera APIs on both platforms are built for single-camera sessions. Getting two concurrent streams to coordinate without memory issues, latency, or inconsistent output required low-level platform work that took time to get right.
The photo pipeline is where the no-fake promise is actually enforced. RAW does not accept uploaded images at all. Every photo must come through the app, live. The pipeline validates live capture (not loaded from the camera roll), strips EXIF data that could be spoofed, and blocks filters at the capture layer. Not a setting the user agrees to, a constraint in the code.
Randomized daily prompts are what make the social mechanic work. If users could choose when to post, they would plan and curate. The randomization removes that option. The prompt arrives, you take the shot, that is your profile for the day. It shifts RAW from "dating app with a camera feature" to something with a different social contract entirely.
The matching algorithm rewards the behavior the app is designed for: consistent posting, real photos, genuine engagement. Users who show up every day rank higher in the match pool. The system does not just ask people to be authentic; it makes authenticity the path of least resistance.
Content moderation also benefits from the dual-camera format. Every photo gives context from both sides, which makes automated and manual review more effective than single-camera content.
Architecture:
- Native mobile app for iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play)
- Dual-camera capture engine with simultaneous front/back stream coordination
- Live-capture image pipeline with filter prevention
- Randomized prompt scheduling with timezone-aware delivery
- Matching algorithm incorporating authenticity signals and engagement patterns
- Two-step content moderation pipeline (automated + review)
- Cloud infrastructure for image storage, user management, and matching
results#
500,000+ downloads on Android alone (AppBrain, 2025). That is a meaningful number for a consumer app built on the premise that users would accept daily, unplanned photo prompts and zero filters. It hit #1 in the Dating category on Google Play at peak. The app has a 3.8-star rating across 2,600+ reviews, available on both iOS and Android.
